We're about one thousand miles
closer to Florida, the oranges
are twenty cents cheaper
and cold at the grocery store.
I've had to dig hard into the skin,
sniff the citrus mist, sneeze it back out,
get to the sink and slop
my dripping wrists just to eat this
damned delicious fruit.
True joy is a serious thing.
Autumn changes the Reedy
and the scent of its sluice through town.
